New Moon in my opinion is the most depressing book of the series. Every time I read this book, it seems like I am depressed until I finish it. In the beginning you don’t see it coming, Edward leaving her, but then the Bella’s birthday party thrown by Alice turned around Edwards view. He doesn’t want Bella to be like him, and he doesn’t want her to get killed. He believes it is in her best interest for him to leave so she can be a normal human being. For almost the entire rest of the book Bella is depressed and you feel depressed. After she starts hanging out with Jacob (yum), she feels really good around him. Jacob is like her sun, keeps her warm and lightens everything around her. She begins to start acting “normal” around him, but also realizes if she does stupid stuff she can “see” and “hear Edward, which makes her do crazy things. Everything seems to be going well, until Jacob starts acting funny around her. Then he disappears and Bella’s world comes crashing down all over again. Jacob finally comes around to make her guess what has happened to him, since he is bound not to be able to say anything. He gives her hints, but unfortunately Bella only remembers the stories about the “cold ones” and forgets the other part for a short time.
When Bella figures out Jacob is a werewolf, she finally gets her Jacob back, but some of the pack isn’t so accepting of it. When Jacob is off running after an evil vampire, Bella gets depressed, missies Edward, and she wants to “see” him again. She does a cliff dive that she saw the pack doing long before Jacob turned and didn’t realize how dangerous the tide was.
After her stupid mistake Alice shows up thinking Bella killed herself, Jacob tells a mysterious person the phone about a funeral, and Alice and Bella go on an extremely dangerous trip to stop Edward from getting himself killed.
Like I previously stated…I LOVE the books…even if you’ve seen the movies..PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE read the books!!! (show less)

Bella and Edward's relationship went from meeting to endless impossible co-dependence in an instant. It's a bit gross, and not a great message for, well anyone. Her relationship with Jacob is fun healthy twinged with a bit of desperation (as Bella is essentially using him). I prefer Jacob obviously. But, throughout all of New Moon, Bella is depressed and frankly obnoxious. She whines, moons, emos and bemoans the hole Edward has left in her chest. This Hole practically becomes a new character as it's referenced so damn much.

As with Twilight, the plot as it were begins as the book winds down (Chapter 20 or so) the rest of the book is a story of an overly mature (maybe not emotionally mature) young woman trying to hold her life together as she heals from a break up. Which, if you've ever experienced that pain, reading it for millions of pages will be exceptionally grating.

Eclipse had better be better otherwise my faith in the 13-year-old-girl-defines-my-reading-choices genre will be shaken to the core (show less)

  This may possibly be the only book I'll ever encounter in which a chain of events is triggered by the protagonist's getting a paper cut. (Apparently the tiniest droplet of blood is just too tempting for certain "vegetarian" vampires. Time to leave town, Cullens!)

Bella's primary skill is her ability to cook, and what good is that to a vampire? She isn't particularly witty or wise. She just has unreadable thoughts.

  Bella's selfishness is epic. Yet, I'm still drawn to these characters in a middle school-mentality way. What girl doesn't want to have the most beautiful boy ever be in love with her always no matter what? Even if her petulance over not getting to be a vampire is monumentally annoying. Imagine Underworld without the action, without the fine females, without being dark and spooky, and with even less dialog--just a post-pubescent girl telling you, telling you, and telling you some more about her irrational worries that (spoiler alert) turn out to be wasted worries all along.
  So if you are thinking about reading this book, let me tell you what to do.
  1. Start by turning the closed book on its side with the binding on the table and the pages facing you.
  2. Measure exactly 1 inch from the left side, leaving 0.7 of an inch on the right.
  3. Use a hatchet or scissors (no running!) or a butter knife or whatever it takes to slice the book right at that 1 inch mark.
  4. Throw that inch of eviscerated paper into the nearest fireplace, don't look back, and pretend that it never existed.

  Then you will be read to delve into and enjoy this book!
