A lot of the complaints are true. Thomas Covenant is a horrible character. I can't even bring my self to loathe him. He so boring, so annoying, so much of a failure, that I can't feel hatred (or love) for him.
When I read a book that I hate, I like to finish that book. At least when I finish it, I can name all its bad points and why. I can give a full review. However, this book took me two months to read. I had to begrudgingly pick it up every single time. It doesn't take me that long to read a book. A month for some of the worst ones, like Brisingr or anything written by Kevin J Anderson, or a week at most for a good one.
This book started out annoying. I hated getting through the first few chapters. However, they seemed to have a point: showing how horrific of a life Thomas Covenant has. However, this goes on for the next 350 pages. For more than 1/2 of the book, you hear about how horrible he is. I wish it constituted as whining. Essentially, he said he was a failure, and in every single chance he had to redeem himself, he forced himself to fail. Then he continued to obsess on how much he fails at life, or as a human being. Thee are 400 pages of him doing this.
What's even worse, is that Donaldson doesn't seem to understand how the English language works. He uses nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs incorrectly. Just to sound floral and pretty. Just so he can sound cool. I have read some truly bad books. Ones that can be laughed at. However this is a book that should have never left the author's notes, with all seriousness. (show less)
