I found this book a very easy read. The characters were not incredibly complex, but the story made up for that. I enjoyed how the author examines how people make moral decisions. I was a bit saddened with the ending because the optimist in me wanted there to be a happy ending for Hanna.

The subject matter covered in the novel are so varied that it made for interesting reading. The concept of a young man and an older woman, genocide, and struggling with a moral dilemma all blend together... (show more)

"The tectonic layers of our lives rest so tightly one on top of the other that we always come up against earlier events in later ones, not as matter that has been fully formed and pushed aside, but absolutely present and alive."

This book... left me feeling heavy and sad. While the style of writing didn't lend itself especially to my getting emotionally attached to any of the characters (which I think was intentional and went according to the story conceptually very well), it was ... (show more)

I find this a very delicate read, astonished by the sensibility in the margins of the thin chapters. It's remarkable how Hanna's life unravels, and how she holds onto her pride. The ending weighs me down as well, a feeling of unsatisfaction, but that's how things usually go down.

it's a small book, yet so delicately written and thought-provoking that leaves me saddened and heavy. Varied issues are masterfully raised by Schlink, such as love affair between a teenage boy and a middle aged woman, genocide, moral decision, how the infamous Nazi period should be confronted by future generations. I can understand why reviews towards this books is so diverse, as it's not an easy read as one might assume at first sight. Several memorable quotes have lingered on my mind once I have closed the book:
"I thought that if the right time gets missed, if one has refused or been refused something for too long, it's too late, even if it is finally tackled with energy and received with joy. Or is there no such thing as "too late"? Is there only "late," and is "late" always better than "never"? I don't know."
"What a sad story, I thought for so long. Not that I now think it was happy. But I think it is true, and thus the question of whether it is sad or happy has no meaning whatever."
