This really should have been called "Ode to the Liturgical Year", the first 80-90 pages are flowery language on what makes the Liturgical Year special. For what it is Joan is an excellent writer, but that wasn't what I was looking for in this book.

I was wanting a step by step explanation of the the Liturgical year by an expert in the field, what I got was more of an insider's view of the topic. I am not Catholic or even Orthodox so the Liturgical year is completely foreign to me. ... (show more)

A great book for anyone who plans worship services and wants the entire year to make sense and point to the reason for worship... Jesus Christ, and His resurrection.

While Joan Chittister writes in a more "mystical" style than i would have approached this subject i think she dose an amazing job of relaying the importance of saying to the world... your calendar is not the calendar that runs my life; the calendar that tells me who i am in Christ is the calendar that point to Him, a... • A well written overview of the liturgical year. And though I have learned about the liturgical year over the years from other sources, I was not raised in a liturgical environment. However, Chittister's view provides the read with a rich not barren overview of the Christian Calendar and is more inspirational than informational. But, it is a book that has given me food for thought and food for the soul with inspirational statements.
