The Law

In The Law, Bastiat states that "each of us has a natural right - from God - to defend his person, his liberty, and his property". The State is a "substitution of a common force for individual forces" to defend this right. The law becomes perverted when it punishes one's right to self-defense in favor of another's acquired right to plunder.

  • This is a great piece of philosophy from another era. Because of emphasis on God and religion, I think the essay is a bit outdated, except with a minority of people that are adherent to a faith. Bastiat's best passage in the essay makes a great argument about the virtues of liberty by speaking of us as children of God. This doesn't really speak to me, however I think it is an important philosophical argument that should be remembered from a time where most people did accept God. And the ar...
