It's a hit!

I had been circling this book in the store for a couple weeks. I love Sophie Kinsella but I wasn't so sure about the whole ghost story. I like both, typical 'chick lit' and horror stories about ghosts, vampires, etc. But I couldn't imagine how both elements would fit into one book and not make it silly.

But now I am so glad I gave it a shot. As it happens to be Kinsella's style, of course the story gets a little too much here and there and sometimes you will find yourself shaking your head at how unlikely some things seem. But overall, this book is a really enjoyable read and fits in nicely between more 'difficult' books because it keeps you entertained like a light Hollywood romantic comedy.

What I especially liked is that everyone can relate to Lara in some way or another. Everyone will have come across really old people in their family or maybe somewhere else and it's always so hard to imagine that they've ever been anything else but old and sick. In this book, Lara gets to discover that her great-aunt Sadie had indeed led a very exciting life and that she had been a very outgoing and happy person. It automatically makes you want to find out more about your own old relatives and what their lives were like in times that were so different from our own and yet so much was the same.

With a great story like that, I find it easy to ignore the fact that most of Kinsella's main characters are people that would drive me nuts in real life. (show less)

No, it's a flop!

really struggled to get into this book, i thought the whole thing was weird! felt a bit let down as i've really enjoyed her other books

  Ok, I think I have compromised too much on my male pride, seems like I cant help but indulge in some harmless chick-lit from time to time, its such a relief!
  So when this book hit the shelf I didnt just go and quietly pick it up, 2 reasons, one it was larger and more expensive than Sophie's other books and then 2, it was a ghost story.
  When it released in a smaller size (hence easier to hide) I had to get it. Hmmm now this book was quite ok, not as much fun as her other works, just about ok... (show more)

It had funny moments indeed, and like all her books the characters were fun and full of life... each unique in their own way, especially the ghost great aunt... all in all, worth reading once and handing it out to someone who needs some frivolous fun over the weekend.   I am in my chick lit mood and have filled up my shopping basket with books by Sophie Kinsella, Madeline Wickham (a.k.a. Sophie Kinsella), Cecilia Ahern etc. This is the first book that I read (and I am unashamed to say it) again as soon as I finished it. Yes, I enjoyed it that much. I was attracted to the "ghost" story and to my astonishment, I discovered that the ghost was far from the kind, gentle spirit that was supposed to help the protagonist that I was expecting. Instead, it was a spoilt, stubborn ghost, self-indulgent and selfish. It was fun!!! And poor Lara, being stuck with annoying Sadie. I could sympathise with her on many levels, one of it being dumped by the boyfriend with no reason, and not knowing why. Of course the story stretches thin, but this is fiction and fantasy, like boys on flying broomsticks or trees that could talk. The secret is forget reality, suspend belief and just chill.
