Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass

Conceived by a shy British don on a golden afternoon to entertain ten-year-old Alice Liddell and her sisters, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass have delighted generations of readers in more than eighty languages. “The clue to the enduring fascination and greatness of the Alice books,” writes A. S. Byatt in her Introduction, “lies in language. . . . It is play, and word-play, and its endless intriguing puzzles continue to reveal themselves long after we have ceased... It's a hit!

There's no elegant way to sum up Alice's story: it's wacked. Not in a bad way; in fact, I mean just the opposite. Carroll has written two profound-... (show more)

No, it's a flop!

"Sublime nonsense" - is the nutshell that this book is. It's not cleverness - its just randomness disquised as cleverness. It just tosses a bunc... (show more)

  • Surreal, unreal, and a classic tale of collapsing realities. As a work of nonsense literature, this is a very playful book, as it spouts off random poetry, imagery, and lacks a large amount of continuity. Seeking meaning in a meaningless world, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland reminds us that "we're all mad here." These books are filled with clever wordplay and pokes at logic, and feature some truly wonderful artwork. While I do not think these stories are for everyone (they are... (show more)

It's tempting to say that, on some level, this is really just a story about a young girl walking around having nonsense conversations with animals. But I guess there's an appeal to those stories that pit one seemingly sane being against an entire ludicrous world. What struck me most was how obviously so many other authors I've read have drawn inspiration from this (most recently, the Dave Eggers novelization of "Where the Wild Things Are" clearly owes a huge debt to Carroll).

If you liked this book try Phantom Toll Booth. It is another crazy childhood world where the nonsensical world/word play together whimsically.

Nice, funny and crazy book, specially the "Alice Adventures in Wonderland". Even though everybody (who has watched the 1951 Disney's film) know the story, the book it's so much better. And the pictures that go along with the story are so pretty. I really enjoy it.

And I forgot to say that the Tim Burton's movie is CRAP, what's all that action and fights doing in a story like this one?

I wasn't thrilled with the new Tim Burton film. I did very much like the 1999 version that aired on NBC with Tina Majorino as Alice and Martin Short as the Mad Hatter.

I loved the Disney movie as a kid(and still do), but after recently reading the book, I realized that it was meant to be darker than Disney. I didn't understand how they could do something as amazingly sinister as Snow White and then make Alice in Wonderland a whimsical fairytale dream! I believe Tim Burton will do amazing with this film. I've realized that most people think that Tim is remaking the real story. Well, he isn't. He's updating it and sending Alice back to Wonderland. Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter is The Red Queen, Anne Hathaway is The White Queen, etc.(look it up on IMDB). It will be amazing and I'm going to see it the day that it comes out!

I thought it was funny that the caterpillar was smokin' a hookah! Kind of ruined by Disney because I knew what was coming next and kept picturing the movie in my mind as I was reading. But it was fun.

Tim Burton to take on Alice

As I posted on the "Alice" message board, I'm very disappointed with the way the "Silver Screen" has interpreted this story. Even Disney who sugar coats everything, made this out to be so dark and sinister. And now I find out Tim Burton is to release his own version in 2010...while I love Tim and his creative work, I'm not really jazzed about him taking this story and rehashing it again. Quite ruining good books! I just don't see this story as darkly as some...it seems more like a fantastical dream and a semi-coming of age story. And shoot me if Johnny and Helena are Mad Hatter and Alice...or maybe Johnny will be the Cheshire Cat? Either way, I'm skeptical. What do you think?
