Yeah I agree with most things said about death, how it's sudden, final and all. But "Professor" Snape being alive is a possibliity. For one, Rowling never mentions the appearance of his portrait in the Head's office when Potter went to look at Snape's memory in the pensieve. She did so with Dumbledore's portrait after his death(it appeared almost immediately). As to how he survived, Arthur Weasley was cured of the snake bite at St. Mungo's and Snape being the master potioner he is, would probably have some in store for such an ocassion. That could easily explain the re-appearance of his character if there were to be any future books, cause he is such an interesting character. Though by naming his second son Severus, Harry confirms his death. Unless... he's never been in the Headmaster's office since that fateful day and is none the wiser. But Professor Longbottom would have mentioned the absence of Snape's portrait. So there! He's dead.

The sudden nature of death in the books is only in the revelation of it to the reader. That is, I believe, to add to the drama of things. But Dumbledore's death for one is an almost year long process. And Sirius' is more of a mystery. Most of the random deaths occur during the Battle of Hogwarts. That is always the case in battles. And let us not forget that death is not so final. Even after Dumbledore's, he still manages to advise and put forward his "grand plan" to Snape from his portrait. And Headless Nick's explanation of his own being (neither here nor there), is another possible way that one might be able to exist in the world after death. But of course, in Rowling's world, this is only for the wizards and witches...
