I would have to wholeheartedly disagree with you. I started reading HP when I was six, and ten years later I began to feel that it was a bit overrated, especially when the seventh book came out. I reread the entire series about a year ago, and as an adult I had so much more appreciation for the books. For kids, it's a fun story with magic, but the story and characters have so much depth to them that you could spend weeks analyzing them. JK Rowling has such a good grip on her story and her characters, and she's an absolutely eloquent writer. I have a hard time seeing why people are saying that the writing is not good. As for the statement that it's a fad, I simply don't think so. It's not Twilight, with empty characters and the fan base like that of a rock star that will soon become disinterested. The HP fan base is thoughtful, with an invested interest in the series. I'm sorry that you feel the books are "overrated." Maybe if you reread them with a critical eye, like I did, you would have a change of heart.
I think the fact that nobody is talking about these books now goes to show that they were just the flavor of the day. They are the Paris Hilton of books.
While I agree that HP is overrated, no, just not.
"Nobody" is talking about Shakespeare these days, but does it mean his works are not good? Really, this logic is flawed as people today don't talk so much about books these days, even the fangirls of Twilight would probably talk more about the movie than the books.
The series was fun and a good read, but definitly near the end J.K. was getting desperate. The storylines were not very well developed. Book 6 was what I commonly call a placer, nothing really happens to advance the story line (with the exception of the one chapter where Dumbledore died). Other than that it wasn't very good. Book 7 was an atrocity. The story was so rushed and the plot did not get advanced very well at all. Now that being said the other books leading up to that were well written and very well thought out. As well they were fun to read.
anyone who believes this series to be "overrated".. i want you to show me some books that are better, more fun to read, more addicting, more emotional, more vivid, and more revered throughout the world. Dont say Lord of The Rings, because they arent as fun to read. I dont need to learn 75 genealogies of every character in the book.
But, I am biased, because i grew up with these books, but these books made me want to be a reader AND a writer. If my house caught on fire I would save my pets and my harry potter books.
Before I read them, I thought they were overrated. The hype and mania turned on my contrarian impulse and I kept away.
On January 1 this year (2009), 2 years after the LAST book was written, I finally sat down and read all (having gotten the books for xmas as presents, at my request).
I had seen the movies and thought that they were well done, and books 1 and 2 are faithful renditions. But by the end of book 3, there was so much there that the movie left out, and it was such intricate plot-making, that I found myself hooked like everyone else around me had been for years.
I have changed my mind. I don't think it is overrated. The subject matter captured the imagination of three generations in a moment in time, with characters that came alive and who became our companions.
No living author has done what Rowling has accomplished. And that's saying a lot. She has broken the mold of the "struggling writer" with her enormous success, and with just one tale, if divided in 7 books.
Yes.

Harry Potter, the whole, is not overrated.
