  • IS HARRY POTTER OVERRATED????

Are you insane man? No character development? Did you just skim the fifth book or something? Half the book was about Harry's moaning and groaning transition into adulthood. One of the main themes of the books was ways that the characters coped with death. Sixth book Ron grew as an adolescent and Hermione did as well in the fourth book. As for glaring plot holes, if you read every one of those books I'd say that every single plot hole from the earlier books was filled. Wandering storylines almost always had something to do with the plot as a whole. If you really thought that stuff about Harry Potter, then please give them another MORE CAREFUL chance.

The first one was good, but if anything the series got better with every book, not the other way around. They can be viewed as becoming worse for the impatient reader, or someone who can't stand longer novels. Other than that, they definitely do NOT become worse as the series goes on.

I enjoyed them, pure escapism.... entertaining nonsense.

While they're simplistic enough and easy to read, it makes them a proverbial "gateway drug" of literature. Which is a good thing, in my opinion. Not particularly well written, per se, but definitely engrossing enough to be entertaining throughout.

not really. overrated = nto as good as people say. sure the self professed literary poets would say that its a crap series but the fact is a lot of people enjoyed it, hence i disagree.

I do so agree with you. The trouble with the films is they cannot include all the humour and clever references to other parts of the story. I love the last one for this, the way so many threads are tied up and referred to perhaps right from the first book. And exactly as you say, how they 'grow up' with Harry.
I'm on the 5th book again, I read the whole series every 3 or 4 months and always notice something I hadn't before.

I don't think so. I personally enjoyed the story from beginning to end. The last two books were a great ending and it was sad to leave Harry behind. The books grew with the characters, not only in length but in how it approached current aspects of life... it matured!
It is an achievement in itself to follow the story of such amazing characters through 7 years of their lives... and a bit before and after. I will continue to read them over and over again for years to come.

Yes, it's overrated. But worth reading once - first three books for children, last four books for mid-to-late teens. Whether we like it or not, Harry Potter's fandom has made this a classic.

      J. K. Rowling put a meaning behind every name, location, and detail in those books. It simply boggles my mind how much research she must have done. Look up any non-major character name or any significant prop (such as the hand of glory), and you will find a myth or story behind it that even further develops that character or prop's personality and significance to the story. I took an entire course on the Harry Potter novels and its story roots/themes, which you can trace all the way back to the ancient Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians. So, no, they are not overrated. They are simply an amazing feat of modern literature.

No its not overrated AT ALL. The series is wonderful, it makes people READ in the world of visual media (which is a big success in itself), its unique and it talks a lot about the real world, while stimulating one's imagination at the same time. J K Rowling is not the best writer in the world but its certainly a very, very good series.

      First of all,

If anyone calls Harry Potter Overrated you are slightly retarded. No offense. ;)

They are engaging and they are getting countless children and young adults interested in reading again. With the education around the world going straight into the shitter because of things like religious indoctrination and young people emulating social idiots like Tila Tequila and Paris Hilton you have to take what little you can get.

If a kid is willing to spend days reading a story instead of playing video games or watching useless shows like MTV I would -never- call that overrated.

Also, Harry Potter is like a gateway drug, you start there and move up in the world of literature.

J.K. Rowling has done a lot for this world and if it were up to me I would publicly recognize her with a nobel peace prize, because that is what reading (and by coorelation intelligence) does, it inspires peace.

I've never read so many differing opinions about one series of books. I guess this is a polarizing topic. I don't think the books are overrated. The characters drive the books. Rowling has created a rich world and she peoples this world with equally rich, three dimensional characters. Her work isn't predictable. There is always a surprise lurking around the corner. Is the series perfect? No. Is a series ever perfect? I don't think so. The seventh book was great, but there was also wandering for a good 100+ pages. The quality of the rest of the book made up for the lags, however. The fifth book was my least favorite of the series. I thought it was a bit overlong, and rather unpleasant.

A learned man will have some tolerence for others' views. For your information I am not a retard.I am not saying that Harry Potter series is a worthless junk. The books became a worldwide phenomenon after the fourth book only.Since then the writer sort of 'cashed in' the series. The series lost it's charm and magic from the 5th book onwards.

Okay, about the last book, sure there was a bit of wandering, but its just realistic! Adventures can't always be non-stop action. No offence but i dont agree with u on that.

Oh just shut up! Sure she made a lot of money but thats cause the series was awsome and it did not lose its "charm", it just got more complicated like it naturally would with everything that went on. ur stupid and should get some taste.
